So yeah…that episode happened. I wrote an essay about it for Salon.com. Mostly focusing on the things I found interesting about the episode – the theme for this week is the uses and mis-uses of betrayal – but I do touch on the big controversy.
Cogman-written episodes always hum along on another level. Apart from what I’m sensing was a showrunner-mandated act of brutality perpetrated against a beloved character and the viewing audience, this was a good episode. I’m glad people like Steven are writing about this in a sober, thoughtful way, without invective. Not because I’m against passionate, angry critique, but because jerk babies are, and maybe we can get some of them to come around & be better people??
Well, the other problem with the episode was the Sand Snakes – but that’s largely an issue of fight choreography and direction, not script.
