Hi! Not sure if this falls in your area of expertise, but in the last Dany chapter in DWD, it is proven Dany has menstruation. Is this worth looking into for Targs? This caught me by surprise when I came by it.

Sorry, but this is a hoax, based on some Daria fanfic from the late 90s.

Just goes to show, you can’t trust everything you read on Tumblr.

Why did that man in the Riverlands in ACOK say that none of the horrible stuff that happened to him and other smallfolk would hvae happened when Aerys was on the throne? Was he ignorant or was he just dreaming of greener pastures?

Because most of Aerys’ reign was peaceful and nostalgia erases the rough edges.

…which you can bet Varys is going to exploit.

Absolutely. You can already see the fertile ground in AFFC and ADWD, with people remembering the good times of the Targaryens, and wondering about whether baby Aegon was really dead.

After the Battle of the Camps, what would have happened if Robb had kept the Riverlands army, called Roose Bolton down and besieged Tywin at Harrenhall? It’s not like Tywin could have held out long in Harrenhall given that he had 15,000 soldiers, plus staff, and not much in the way of supplies.

Stafford Lannister’s army would have marched down the River road and stormed through the Riverlands unopposed, leaving Robb cut off from his supply base and trapped between two enemy armies. Meanwhile, Robb would have had to somehow feed 40,000 men out in the field, which means his army is going to starve faster than Tywin’s will.

Tywin wanted Robb to come after him at Harrenhal.

At the same time, keeping the Riverlords together would have been a good idea, by giving Robb another army to use in the field.

A riff on your medieval prisons post. Why does the iron throne have so many gaolers? All of the “keepers of the keys” and under-gaolers etc, especially during the time of Robert’s reign? Were they there simply because of littlefinger bribing people with a plush posting? And why so many posts even in say Maegor’s time when one presumes the dungeon would be full? Why not simply a chief gaoler, a couple guards as turn-keys? Love the tumblr!

A combination of Littlefinger’s embezzlement (it’s important to understand that a lot of these jobs only exist on paper as a way for LF to hide his embezzlement by collecting their salaries).

And as for Maegor, I assume he would need a lot of torturers and executioners.

Why, with the exception of daemon and aemond, all the major players of the dance die like chumps? Is it subverting a trope or just bad writing?

I’m not the biggest fan of the Dance of Dragons for this reason. All is a bit of an exaggeration – Roddy the Ruin, Rhaenys, etc. – but quite a lot of the war hinges on curb-stomp battles (and therefore chump deaths of people like  Otto Hightower and Criston Cole) that are pretty unsatisfying. It comes across as bad wrestling plotting.

Do you think dragon riding genetic, like X-chromosome linked or Autosomal recessive? Do you think Septon Barth a reference to Mendel and Barth syndrome, an x chromosome disorder?

It’s definitely genetic – hence the dragonseeds, the Valyrian emphasis on incest to maintain the gift, etc. etc. I don’t think it’s X-chromosome linked, because you’d see fewer women than men being dragonriders and that doesn’t seem to be the case.
