All the posts about Robb trying to take Harrenhal made me wonder about something: as far as I can recall Tywin only decided to take Harrenhal after he got word of the Battle of the Camps. If Robb had been thinking a few more steps ahead, could he have sent a small force (500 – 2,500) men on horse immediately after he freed Riverrun and kept Tywin from simply taking the largest castle in Westeros without a fight? Or would he have needed to move his entire army to hold off the Lannister forces?

No. Tywin decided to retreat to Harrenhal at the Crossroads, he was much closer to it than Robb.

And the problem everyone has with Harrenhal is that a small garrison can’t hold it, because it’s so big it’s too easy for someone to get over the wall in an undefended area.
