So it’s clear the show is terrified of killing off major cast members now that we are completely off book. They had a shot when Tormund looked terrified in ep 6 as he was being dragged into the water. They missed another HUGE opportunity when Cersei says she would order the Mountain to kill Jaime. We are led to believe she won’t because she didn’t with Tyrion which is exactly why she should’ve. This finale needed a gut punch. That should’ve been it. Thoughts?

I don’t know if I’d go with those choices, but yes, as the cast shrinks, they can’t go back to the same well any more.

So, the show pretty much confirmed that littlefinger will die in the books. After this happens, what will happen to his belongings? He never really owned harrenhal and the fingers is pretty unimpressive as fiefdoms go, but with all his dealings and corruption and brothels he must have vaults filled with money or something of the sort somewhere, what would happen to that?

Well, he doesn’t have any heirs or family, so it probably goes to whoever’s jurisdiction the stuff is.

Shouldn’t Jon’s real name be Visenys as Rhaegar clearly was naming his kids after the Conquerors (Aegon, Rhaenys…) so he could have the “Three Heads of the Dragon”?

That’s definitely a possibility. Keep in mind, Rhaegar and Lyanna didn’t have ultrasounds, so they wouldn’t have known the gender ahead of time. And since Rhaegar was a very destiny-focused guy, I think Visenya might have been the name because he was sure the child would be a daughter.

I think you’ve answered this question before, but I can’t find where you responded. For someone who wants to write an AWOIAF fanfic and wants it to be reasonably consistent with the canonical universe and characterization, which of yours and other ASOIAF analyses would you recommend reading and/or studying?

First things first, study the text. There is so much detail, so many things to mis-remember or forget. Re-read the books, highlight stuff, have asearchoficeandfire open as you write (would also help with word choice I would imagine).

Second, in terms of analyses to read or study, it depends what you’re looking for. I tend to focus on politics and economic policy, @warsofasoiaf is excellent on military history, @poorquentyn is excellent on character arcs and the whole magical-meta plot, @goodqueenaly is very good on House Targaryen but also minor houses and law, @nobodysuspectsthebutterfly I would always defer to on anything to do with Sansa, @joannalannister is a great resource on House Lannister. This isn’t a dispositive list (I am super-slammed today and am seriously multi-taskign), but it is a good place to start.

Maybe it’s just me, but I thought it was pretty clear that Lyanna (in the show) was the one who named her son Aegon. It would make no sense for Rhaegar to do it (as he already had an Aegon). My question: would Lyanna have known that Elia and the children were dead? That is, how likely do you think it is that she knew about the war’s ending before Ned showed up?

Isn’t it kind of weird and creepy either way?

If she knows, she’s decided to name her son after her husband’s dead kid, like a replacement goldfish.

If she doesn’t, she’s decided to name her son the same thing as the son Rhaegar just disinherited, which is a monumental dick move.

What are your thoughts on the people Bran saw through the eyes of the Weirwood? I get Lyanna and Benjen and Brandon Snow, but who are ‘a woman heavy with child’ and a ‘brown-haired girl slender as a spear who stood on the tips of her toes to kiss the lips of a young knight as tall as Hodor’? is the tall knoight Dunk? Who is he kissing?

The brown-haired girl…Old Nan, maybe?

A woman heavy wild child, I think that’s Bael’s “bride.”
