Was Thor Ragnarok an attack on Western imperialism or am I reading to much into this movie?

If you’re reading too much into it, you’re not the only one…

Anti-colonialism is a major theme of the film, whether we’re talking about Odin’s benevolent paternalism covering up a legacy of conquest, Hela’s manifest destiny ideology, Valkryie’s complicated relationship to her past, Asgard as a place vs. as a people, and of course the end result of Asgardians becoming refugees looking for a new home.

Hey, new to your page, but really enjoy your work! So I was reading your POT7K Stormlands edition. Likewise I was very dissapointed in that section of Woiaf as well(Particularly as a Baratheon/Durrandon enthusiast). Is that the last we will hear about pre Aegon I westeros, as far as a book goes? Or do you think post fire and blood we may get something that delves back into Great Game territory? And connects some of these giant dots? -Keep up the good work

My hope is that GRRM follows up on ASOIAF with equivalents to Fire and Blood for the other Great Houses of Westeros.

What were the differences between European model of feudalism & the Daimyo system in Japan? I’m no expert, but from what I have seen it seems that the Tokugawa Bakufu exerted a lot more absolute power over the Daimyos than any European overlord, being able to sentence Daimyos to commit seppuku or confiscating their domains at will. Would really like your views on this.

Those are quite distinct models, but the important thing to keep in mind is that the Tokugawa shogunate was very much a reaction – building upon the legacies of Odo Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, to be sure –

to the complete lack of central authority during the Sengoku Jidai.

So it wouldn’t be an apples-to-apples comparison. If you wanted something more similar to the Tokugawa Shogunate, maybe something more like the regimes of Henry VII or Cardinals Richelieu and Mazarin. On the other hand, if you wanted to look to the weaker feudal monarchies of Medieval Europe, a good comparison might be the Taira-Minamoto wars or the Sengoku Jidai itself.
