Marvel the Untold Story as told to Graphic Policy Radio
Last night we had the one and only @seanhowe on the podcast to talk marvel history. His book is unmatched!
We discussed Comics unions, Steve Englehart, marvel in Hollywood, the cyclical nature of the industry and how the hell the Clone Saga was allowed to happen.
I also got to compare the way Marvel continuity was build by chance and layer to the challenges of renovating pre-war NYC apartments. Layer upon layer of paint, some of which have lead you need to abate and then there’s the asbestos removal….
Anyway, give a listen! We are also @graphicpolicy ITunes account.

An excellent conversation I was thrilled to be a part of.
Hello Steven, judging from A Commentary on the True Life of the High Spider, you at least partially subscribe to the theory that the Andal invasion happened much later than at 6000 BC. Can you please provide some thoughts on how such historical discrepancy is even possible with the maesters chonicling everything?
No, I don’t even partially subscribe to the theory; I merely added some footnotes to acknowledge that there’s a debate in the fandom. And just to be clear, in footnote 1 of Part I, I was referring to the Andal Conquest not Aegon’s Conquest, although I will clear that up (along with much else) when I combine all three parts.

And now in Non-ASOIAF News: Guest Appearance on Graphic Policy Radio
Hey folks, I’m talking live about the history of Marvel Comics over at Graphic Policy Radio!
Do you think we will see Targaryen-era family trees for all the Great Houses by the end of Fire and Blood? If so, what do you believe the chances for Conquest-to-Dance ones in Volume 1 are?
That would be nice, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.
Do we know how many men the Tyrell-Lannister alliance lost at the Blackwater?
Not really, no.
hello maester steven, any ideas for a ‘what if’ were sansa goes to robert instead of cersei with the news about the starks leaving KL? thanks!
Robert was out hunting, so I don’t think there was an opening.
Steven, if I may ask, what do you think of Civil War in the comics? Cap was right in the movie, but I’m rereading now and idk what to think of this. Tony on the comics seems more reasonable than in CA:CW. Thoughts?
See here.
And no, Tony in the comics is far more unreasonable than in CA:CW. In CA:CW, Tony is naively ignorant about how the Sekovia Accords will lead to indefinite detention without trial, in the comics he’s the one who designs the prisons.
What’s your take on the tax bill that just passed? As someone who is below the poverty line and has a fiancee who was going to pursue a graduate degree, it seems like it hurts us almost purposely. Also, it seems like a worse version of the Bush tax cuts that stagnated wages for the non rich and didn’t do our econ any favors. Is this right?
It is substantially worse than the Bush tax cuts. With those, Republicans were content to A. have the cuts be temporary, B. give everyone at least some nominal cut, and C. increase the deficit/debt rather than raising taxes on the bottom to pay for cuts on the top.
Both the House and Senate bills give permanent massive tax cuts to corporations (and to wealthy people who can structure themselves as pass-through companies), and to pay for it make all the cuts for individuals temporary, which works out to a tax increase for the vast majority when they go away. Many aspects of the bills are designed to punish blue states (SALT and mortgage caps will hit middle class and affluent people in states that have income taxes and higher property values) and blue voters (the grad tax, for example). Finally, eliminating the individual mandate will leave millions without health insurance and higher premiums for everyone else.

Usually as a personal valet.
