Renly had a hundred swords, Ned had fifty, the Lannisters had a hundred. Renly didn’t have the manpower to take on both by himself.
Once Renly was denied by Ned Stark why didn’t he just follow through with his plan. Seizing the Lannisters/Joff. And seize Ned/Starks as well? One would assume between himself(closer power base then Neds) and his Tyrell allies he could have pulled it off.
