If being in trade is so disparaging for the nobility, what did they do with all the excess food their peasants harvested?

Oh, they absolutely sold it in the market, but that wasn’t considered being “in trade,” because the source of the income was the land as opposed to commerce. 

If that sounds a bit flimsy to you, that’s because it absolutely was.
