Why was Ser Rodrik knighted if the north does not follow the tradition and who would have done it?

My guess would be that Ser Rodrik was knighted by Robert for his participation in either Robert’s Rebellion or the Greyjoy Rebellion, similar to Ser Jorah Mormont.
