Find two landmarks that are on the map and measure the distance between, using paces if necessary, then use that to establish a scale (assuming the map is to scale).
Maester Steven, I am a man currently wrestling with the difficulty of working out distances on the map of a Fantasy setting for which only the very roughest scale has been given: may I please ask if you have any advice on how one might work out distances on the map of an alien planet? (however approximately).
