Would hedge knights generally be from a smallfolk background, or would they be more likely younger sons of of lesser noble houses, without lands of their own and unlikely to inherit them? If they were from a noble background and they became a household knight, would they still wear their house’s colours, or does swearing your sword to someone mean you wear their colours as long as you’re in their service?

  1. More likely younger sons, usually of your more minor houses or household knights. Remember, Dunk gets chosen to be a squire only because Arlan’s nephew died at Redgrass Field.
  2. Well, in Westerosi feudalism, they keep their own house colors, as Westeros does not seem to practice bastard feudalism in a comprehensive fashion.
