Maester Steven, it struck me some little while after reading THE SONS OF THE DRAGON that the most logical reason for Lord Walder Frey to name his third true-born son Aenys Frey would be in tribute to some former Lord or Great Knight of the Twins, rather than for King Aenys – could the modern Aenys therefore be named for the Lord of the Crossing who rode with Prince Aegon the Uncrowned? (and almost certainly surrendered himself after the latter’s abrupt demise).

Given the context of other Freys named Rhaegar and Aegon (two of them!), it seems more likely that they were named after Targaryens as a way to curry favor, the same way that the Freys have named their kids Tywin (two of them), Jaime, Cersei, and Tion to do the same for the Lannisters.
