What is the political status of the vale in the show ?

Incredibly vague. It seems that “Robin” Arryn is the ruler of the Vale and seemingly in open rebellion, but the lords of the Vale seemingly bent the knee to Jon Snow as King in the North, but for some reason Sansa needs Littlefinger to keep the Lords of the Vale behind them.
