You mentioned that feudal service was time-limited (to, say, 40 days), but how regularly could this be invoked? Could a liege release their bannerman on day 41, only to immediately send a rider after him and call him back for another 40 days before he and his forces even get home (and then keep on doing this)? Or was it limited to 40 days per year? Or 40 days per war/campaign (then the liege could potentially get creative in defining what counts as a separate campaign…)? Thanks!

It was supposed to be per campaign, and there were monarchs who abused this to try to eke out multiple campaigns in a year, but monarchs who tried to get too cute would face substantial desertions.
