What did Robert do to earn such loyalty from the people of Stoney Sept?

People often dismiss Robert Baratheon as bad at politics, when it fact he was bad at governance – in person, Robert was incredibly charming and charismatic, turning enemies into allies almost effortlessly.

Robert turns up in Stoney Sept, and he’s this handsome, romantic figure, who’s been twice wronged by the Mad King and his heir, who’s under their medical care and essentially has taken sanctuary with them (so there’s a duty of care issue), and so on.
