How well did that work out for Maegor?
Rhaegar might have been able to handle the situation without touching off a fullscale war, tho. Like, when Brandon shows up shouting for him to come out and die, he probably doesn’t have Brandon imprisoned, lure Brandon’s dad there under false pretenses, have them both burned alive, and then demand Jon Arryn send him more folks to burn.
Not saying its all happy endings and roses for hypothetical King Rhaegar, but Aegon the Unworthy did a ton of gross shit to ladies and never provoked a fullscale rebellion, and Rhaegar seems more competent than Aegon IV in a lot of ways.
I’m sure he’d handle the situation better than Aerys did.
But what happens when Brandon and Brandon’s dad show up and say “you can’t take the daughters of Lords Paramount, give Lyanna back” and Rhaegar says in open court, “I can’t, I need her to fulfill an ancient prophecy, because I am the father of the messiah and the world’s about to end”?
