This sub-infeudation post got me thinking about the relative political instability, under Targaryen rule, we see in the Riverlands compared to the other kingdoms. Could a contributing factor lie in the actual feudal contracts set down by Lord Edmyn Tully after Aegon made him Lord Paramount? All the other kingdoms had a preexisting feudal structure that was simply carried forth into the Targaryen era. If so, what should Aegon have done to empower House Tully, enough to make them effective rulers?

I don’t know if it’s the contracts, and it’s possible the weakness was in the pre-existing feudal structure, which was distinctively weak in the Riverlands.

But, curse aside, Aegon could have definitely empowered the Tullys by giving them Harrenhal and making them strong enough and central enough to dominate their kingdom.
