How do you square your opposition to Grim Dark with your liking for X-Men, since that is the most Grimdark of all Marvel comics, with such bleakfests as the never-romance of Jean/Cyclops, Wolverine’s manpain, Genoshas, Mutant Massacres and House of M. As far as metaphor for progress and acceptance goes, the X-Men reads like society sliding back to medieval acceptance of witches?

X-Men is not grimdark. X-Men is high soap-opera.
