If an army is losing a battle, what’s a cowardly lord more likely to do: Retreat to his estates, or join the enemy army? After all, if he suddenly goes to the opposing army, they might think he’s attacking them.

Joining the enemy usually requires some sort of deal to be worked out ahead of time so that the victorious enemy doesn’t roll over you too.

So retreating is usually the move.
