In the Iron Islands, do you think that the various ship captains owe any feudal obligation to the lords, or are they more like sell-sails who have to follow the rules laid down by the lords if they wish to use the isles as a home port? When Balon calls the longships home, do they make a verbal agreement to sail under the Greyjoy flag/command? How did the Vikings operate in real life (if that is a good comparison)? Thanks for the effort.

I’m pretty sure it’s a feudal relationship. Granted, it’s one with a good deal of autonomy for the captains, since it’s a lot harder for the liege lord to keep an eye on their vassals at sea than it would be on land.
