Why do you think the “broken pact” theory of the Others is so popular, given the overwhelming textual evidence against it?

Because people seem to think that the core thesis of ASOIAF is grey-on-grey morality and the subversion of every trope known to genre fiction. 

Which is a kind of over-extension error, IMO.
