It has been pointed out that King’s Landing is a good location for a capitol because it’s, roughly, at the center of the continent. Yet, before the Conquest, Dorne was ruled from a castle way to the east of the region. Casterly Rock and Storm’s End aren’t centrally located, either. My question: In medieval times and ASOIAF, was it better for a capitol to be located at the center of a region, or to be a port city and more economically successful?

Casterly Rock and Storm’s End are pretty centrally located to their regions, and even Dorne has the Greenblood to give it access to the interior.
