Concerning Lord Borros Baratheon’s illiteracy, is it likely that he suffered from dyslexia (any other disorder) that prohibited him from reading or was it simply not that important to his father to ensure his son&heir could read and write? Education wise, Westerosi nobility are at least at 1300 (guesstimate?). Would it be common for a RL, lets say HRE Duke, to be illiterate? * In Tyrion’s DwD arc on the boat, he remembers his own math education dealing with shape’s and their “hidden secret’s”.*

Depends which time period you’re talking about – the earlier in the Middle Ages, the less literacy, and the more nobility you can find who think about writing as something that priests, scribes, and other servants do.

It is odd for someone that far up in the hierarchy to be illiterate, as Lords Paramount would be in contact with the monarchy and many vassals, as opposed to a lesser lord who would only have to deal with his immediate neighbors who he dealt with face to face.
