About zero. GRRM isn’t a nihilist, he’s a romantic (the man spent years writing Beauty and the Beast for a reason) – the reason why he makes the lows lower is that the highs can be higher.
What’s the chance of the ultimate ending being the White Walkers overrunning Westeros and extinguishing humanity there? Very grim – but I wouldn’t put it past GRRM to have the ultimate twist. (I’m assuming they don’t / can’t get boats elsewhere).
