We see a lot of repeated names in the Targaryen dynasty (Aegon, Viserys, Aemon, etc), but we never, as far as I can tell, see sons named directly after their fathers. This is definitely odd compared to actually medieval dynasties, yes? I feel like every English king and prince was either Edward, Henry or Richard. Martin doesn’t seem too concerned with being overly complicated and confusing when it comes to these things, so I was just wondering if you had any thoughts about that.

GRRM was trying to imitate historical tradition without taking on the burden of annoying numerics and the like. Honestly, six Aegons is a bit much.
