15 – 20 million for the Free Cities doesn’t sound plausible for the total size of their respective areas of influence and the fertility of the land watered by the Rhoyne. 15 – 20 for the cities themselves, perhaps, but what about outlying towns and villages? We only see a few on the map but don’t there have to be many more? Essos is supposed to be highly urbanized, and Pentos and Norvos are both known to control areas hundreds of kilometers across, and have had over a thousand years to develop

It’s a fair point. These are extremely rough estimates, and all we have is a rough sense of the population of the cities themselves. We don’t know how densely populated the countryside is vis-a-vis the cities, especially after the Century of Blood and the presence of the Dothraki.
