It’s the difference between would and might. Eddard might have taken the throne, but it’s more likely that, having acclaimed Robert, the lords of the rebellion would go with Robert’s heir.
Steven, an earlier question asked your opinion on what would have happened if the battle at the ruby ford ended with the death of both Robert and Rhaegar, and your response was “King Stannis”. However, I remembered that in your chapter analysis of Eddard I you suggested that the same scenario might end with Eddard taking the throne. Did something change your opinion in the interim?
