I don’t know if Ned would have been planning to go back – after all, as a middle son, he’s unlikely to inherit, and he’s grown up outside the North. He might want to continue seeing more of the world.
In an AU where Ned and Ashara marry and she follows him home to the North, does she have a similar reaction to Winterfell as Lynesse had to Bear Island when Jorah brought her back? Ashara doesn’t seem to be a vapid harlot in the way Lynesse is portrayed (side question: has GRRM depicted any blonde positively in ASOIAF?), but she still a Southerner unused to the cold and the more simple life getting married following an intense tourney romance.
