Considering how dorne stoos up to the dragons and the cost could the North have done the same?

Depends on the season, I think. In the Winter, I think the snows would make it difficult for the dragons to stay in the air, or to burn down the Wolfswood, which would make the Targaryens rely on field armies who would be easier to defeat in the field and/or starve/freeze to death. 

But in the Spring/Summer, I think the North is more vulnerable.
