About the Stormlander numbers discrepancy in Renly’s army, have you considered the fact that Errols, Staedmons, Conningtons etc. might have been present at Bitterbridge & later at Storm’s End? It’s quite possible that Cat missed their banners or that she saw but failed to recognize them(after all she can’t be expected to know the banners of all lesser houses). And Renly, well he was reciting the names of his supporter houses and just skipped a few to save breath & time..

It’s quite possible, it’s just that it doesn’t solve the whole problem. It explains a bit better how Stannis snaffled up 80% of Renly’s cavalry, and it explains why these guys show up later despite being never being mentioned before.

However, it still leaves open the question of numbers – first of all, how many men does Renly have: 80,000 or 120,000? And which kingdoms do they come from? We know Mace is holding 10,000 at Highgarden when Renly supposedly has 80,000 at Bitterbridge. But what proportion of the 80,000 are Reachermen vs. Stormlanders? We know the Reach can raise 100,000 men, so it seems like their full compliment isn’t in the field, especially since Stormlanders make up a significant proportion of that 80k (or is it 120k?). Likewise, how much of the Stormlands is mobilized, since we know not all of them are joining Renly?

And if Renly’s army isn’t the full power of the Reach and the Stormlands – where are these reserves and who can mobilize them? For example, how much of their forces does House Hightower have at hand to protect them from Euron and his Ironborn? How many men could Aegon VI raise in the Stormlands, the Reach, and the Marches?

Second, the numbers of cavalry is too low. Both Robb and Tywin have about 27-28% cavalry, and the Reach should be disproportionately cavalry given their emphasis on chivalry. If Renly’s army was 80,000, 20,000 cavalry would be about right; but if it’s 120,000, then you’d expect more like 34,000. But regardless. The national compliments makes things even more confusing: the Reach should be able to raise around 27,000 cavalry on their own, and the Stormlands should be able to raise another 6-7,000 (if you accept Elio’s estimate that the modern Stormlands can raise 25,000 men).

So, given that Renly only has 20,000 cavalry at Bitterbridge and Storm’s End – where are these extra 14,000 cavalry? How many of them are Reachermen and how many Stormlanders?
