Why does everyone assume the Great Council’s decisions mean a woman can’t inherit the Iron Throne rather than the king can choose his heir with the consent of the Lords? The first Council overlooked Rhaenys (the Queen who should have been), then the Dance, but the Second Council overlooked Aerion Brightflame’s infant son is passed over in favor of his uncle. Doesn’t that push choice over straight male line succession?

Because according to the WOIAF, “in the eyes of many, the Great Council of 101 thereby established an iron precedent on matters of succession: regardless of seniority, the Iron Throne of Westeros could not pass to a woman.” (p. 65)

Prince Maegor was likely overlooked b/c he was an infant, there was suspected insanity, and apparently the Lannisters bribed everyone.
