Is Doran Martell’s reputation as a master planner deserved? So far we’ve seen two concrete plans: 1.) sign a marriage contract between Viserys and Arriane, but there’s no way Dorne plus whatever army Viserys could gin up would be able to beat the Baratheon/Stark/Arryn/Tully/Lannister alliance that was solidly in place when the marriage contract was signed. 2.) Send Quentyn with 6 men to bring Dany home – a job which everyone (even Quentyn) agrees Quentyn is wildly unsuited for. Why the love?

1. I think the original intention was that Viserys’ army would include forces from Braavos and Tyrosh, possibly the Golden Company or a khalasar. And I’m absolutely sure that Doran meant to destroy at least the Lannister part of that alliance. 

2. If Oberyn had been alive, I think he would have sent Oberyn.
