Not so much red herring as false trail – I think Eddard made it a point to spread the Wylla story around a bit to help hide Jon’s parentage. He may even have taken a boat from KL to White Harbor via the Sisters specifically to blur people’s memories with his first trip.
I’m re-reading ADWD & hung up on Davos I. There’s world-building with a view of the Sisters & more color on guest right, but the purpose seems to be: 1) revealing that Wyman is to declare for Tommen and 2) Ned returned to WF via the Sisters at the start of Robert’s Rebellion & Godric says the fisherman’s daughter is Jon Snow’s mother. #1 could be handled in the next Davos chapter, meaning the only point is #2, which is rarely discussed. Is GRRM just trolling? Red herring or something more?
