I think Varys sees Aegon VI burn along with his hopes for a perfect prince, and finds out that he was betrayed by Illyrio, who swapped the Aegon he saved for his own son.
Apologies if you’ve already been asked, but what fate lies in store for Varys? He certainly appears to be backing the wrong horse, but he’s also managed to survive one doomed Targaryen already.
